Job Description
Seeking freelance copyeditors to work on manuscripts written by self-publishing authors.The position requires copyediting experience within the US publishing industry, access to Chicago Manual of Style 16th edition, the ability to follow specified style guidelines, and the ability to meet deadlines.
Minimum Qualifications:
• Bachelor’s degree (English preferred) with minimum 1–2 years of experience as an editor in a publications environment
• 3–5 years online editing experience using Microsoft Word
• Expert knowledge of the Chicago Manual of Style 16th edition and Merriam-Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary 11th Edition(familiarity with other style guides, including the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (APA) and Associated Press (AP) Stylebook, is a plus)
• An excellent score on our editing test
• Strong attention to detail and to written directions
• Ability to produce thorough edits on short deadlines
• Flexibility to adapt work based on written feedback
• Residence in the US or Canada
Our fee structure is based upon the level of the edit and the editor’s tenure with us.
An editor’s first three to four edits are considered probationary. Until he or she has demonstrated the desired results our clients expect and are receptive to the feedback received, the rates are
$1.65 per page* (basic or line edit)
$2.19 per page (substantive or content edit)
Upon completion of the probationary period, the rates increase to
$1.95 per page (basic or line edit)
$2.40 per page (substantive or content edit)
Our senior editors with a proven track record also have opportunities beyond editing self-publishing writers to tackle other, more traditional edits.
*Note: a page is considered 300 words.
